Google Merchant Center for Omani online stores: free product listings, Shopping ads and product data
By OGB Labs · Published
Why Merchant Center matters for Omani online stores
When someone in Muscat searches for a product, such as an abaya, a perfume, a phone case or a spare part, Google often shows product results with photos and prices before the ordinary blue links. Those results come from product data that stores send to Google through Merchant Center, or that Google reads from product pages. A store that has never set this up is missing from that part of the page, even if its SEO is otherwise good.
Google says free listings can show your products "at no cost" on Google Search, Google Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Google Images and Google Lens, and that they appear alongside any paid campaigns you run (Merchant Center Help). For a small Omani store, that is free visibility on the searches closest to a purchase, and the same catalogue is what you need later for Shopping ads.
Is Google Merchant Center available in Oman?
Yes. Google's list of supported countries and currencies includes Oman, with the Omani rial (OMR) as the supported currency (Merchant Center Help). Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are on the same list with their own currencies, so an Omani store that ships across the Gulf can target those countries too.
One detail matters. In Google's table, a dagger mark shows the countries where the Shopping tab is available to users. Saudi Arabia and the UAE carry the mark; Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait do not (Merchant Center Help). So for shoppers in Oman, plan around the product results in Google Search, Images and Lens, YouTube and Gemini rather than the separate Shopping tab, and check the table again later, because Google updates it.
| Country | Supported currency | Shopping tab marked as available |
|---|---|---|
| Oman | Omani rial (OMR) | No |
| Saudi Arabia | Saudi riyal (SAR) | Yes |
| United Arab Emirates | UAE dirham (AED) | Yes |
| Bahrain | Bahraini dinar (BHD) | No |
| Kuwait | Kuwaiti dinar (KWD) | No |
Free listings and Shopping ads: what is the difference?
Both use the same product data from Merchant Center. Free listings cost nothing: Google decides when to show them, based on how well your data matches the search. New Merchant Center accounts are opted in by default, and you can check the status under Marketing, then Marketing methods. Google is clear that this permission does not guarantee your products will be shown (Merchant Center Help).
Shopping ads are paid. You link Merchant Center to Google Ads and create a Shopping campaign for the target country, and your products can then appear in ad slots, labelled as sponsored, on the searches you bid on (Merchant Center Help). Start with free listings to get the feed clean and approved, then add ads for your best-selling or highest-margin products. Our guide to Google Ads vs SEO in Oman explains how to split a budget between paid and organic.
Arabic, English and the Omani rial in your product data
Arabic and English are both on Google's list of supported languages for Shopping ads and free listings. The rule that catches bilingual stores is that the landing page should be in the same language as the product data: if your feed is in Arabic, it should link to the Arabic product page, and Google says products may be disapproved if most of the data does not match the feed's language (Merchant Center Help).
- Run two product sources: one in English linking to your English product pages, one in Arabic linking to the Arabic versions of the same pages.
- Price products for Oman in OMR, and show the same OMR price on the product and checkout pages. Omani rial prices have three decimal places, so make sure your store and feed use the same rounding.
- Selling to Saudi Arabia or the UAE as well? Google's preferred setup is local currency and language for each country. If you keep OMR prices, its currency conversion feature can show an approximate local price next to yours, but your shipping costs must be in the same currency as your product prices (Merchant Center Help).
- Write titles the way Omani customers search, in each language. Our Arabic SEO guide for Oman covers Arabic keyword choices that apply to product titles too.
What every product needs
Google lists the attributes required for free listings (Merchant Center Help); the full detail for each one is in the product data specification (Merchant Center Help).
| Attribute | When it is required | Tip for Omani stores |
|---|---|---|
| id, title, description, link | All products | One stable ID per product or variant; titles with brand, product type and key detail |
| image_link | All products | Clear photo without promotional text or watermarks; up to 10 additional images |
| price and availability | All products | Must match the product page exactly, in OMR for Oman |
| brand | Products with a clear brand or manufacturer | Use the manufacturer's brand, not your store name, for resold goods |
| gtin or mpn | GTIN when the manufacturer assigned one; MPN otherwise | Use the barcode number on the box for branded goods |
| condition | Used or refurbished products | Common for phones and electronics |
| color, size, age_group, gender | Apparel and accessories | Needed for abayas, dishdashas, shoes and fashion |
| item_group_id | Product variants | Groups sizes and colours of the same item |
Product pages that pass Google's checks
Google checks every feed against the landing page and the website, and pages that fail its minimum requirements can get products or the whole account disapproved (Merchant Center Help). The requirements that most often trip up stores in Oman are:
- Each product links to its own product page, not a category, search results or the homepage.
- The page shows the title, image, price, currency, availability and a buy button, matching the feed.
- The price and stock status do not change after the page loads. Google's crawler treats what it sees after the first load as final, so prices filled in late by a script can cause mismatches.
- Pop-ups for newsletters, language choice or app downloads can be closed and do not cover product details.
- Every visitor sees the same product, whatever their device, location or cookies.
Checkout rules
Google's checkout requirements apply to stores in Merchant Center (Merchant Center Help). Several are about trust, and match what Omani shoppers expect anyway:
- Let individuals buy: business fields such as company name must be optional.
- Support guest checkout. You may require an account, but it must be free and must not force an app download.
- Protect the checkout with a valid SSL certificate, and use third-party payment pages that are also HTTPS-secure. Our guide to payment gateways in Oman compares local options.
- If an item shows as in stock in your listing, customers must be able to add it to the cart and complete the order.
- If you have a minimum order value, set it in Merchant Center's shipping settings so shoppers see it before they click.
- Make sure every product you list can actually be delivered, door to door or to a collection point, in the countries you target.
Shipping and returns
Google recommends shipping settings or a shipping attribute for every product, and a return policy on your website and in Merchant Center, so customers see delivery costs and return terms next to your products (Merchant Center Help). Oman is not on the list of countries where shipping information is mandatory, but add it anyway: free or low-cost delivery inside Muscat is a strong reason to click. Shipping can be set once at account level, or per product with the shipping attribute when a product needs different rates (Merchant Center Help).
Your return policy should also match Omani consumer protection rules for online sellers. Our guide to consumer protection law for online stores in Oman covers what the policy needs to say.
Product structured data on your store
Merchant Center is not the only way Google learns about your products. Google says it can show products and details crawled from your online store even when they are not marked up or in Merchant Center (Merchant Center Help). Adding Product structured data makes those details explicit, and Search Central says it can make pages eligible for merchant listing experiences such as the shopping knowledge panel, Google Images and popular product results (Google Search Central).
- Required: the product name, an image and a nested Offer with a price above zero and a priceCurrency, which for Oman is OMR.
- Recommended: availability, condition, brand, GTIN, SKU, reviews, and shipping and return details. Google recommends stating your general shipping and return policies once in Organization markup.
- Use one URL per currency. If a product is sold in OMR and SAR, give each currency its own URL.
- Put the markup in the initial HTML. Google warns that markup generated by JavaScript can make Shopping crawls less frequent and less reliable for fast-changing details like price and stock.
- Only pages where the shopper can buy the product qualify, and only pages about one product or its variants. Test with the Rich Results Test and URL Inspection in Search Console (Google Search Central).
Products in AI search
Google lists Gemini among the places where free listings can appear (Merchant Center Help), and its product documentation describes product data as an input for its AI-powered experiences (Merchant Center Help). In practice, the same clean, accurate catalogue with correct prices, stock, shipping and returns is what lets Google's AI features recommend your products with confidence. Our guides to Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in Oman and getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI cover the rest of your site.
Setting up Merchant Center step by step
Create a Merchant Center account with the Google account your business uses for Search Console and Google Ads, and enter your business details and online store address.
Verify and claim your website. Google offers your ecommerce platform, email, an HTML tag or file, Google Tag Manager or Google Analytics; a website can be claimed by only one Merchant Center account (Merchant Center Help).
Set up shipping for Oman (and any other target country) and add your return policy.
Add products
Through your store platform's Google integration if it has one, a scheduled feed file from your store, or the Merchant API for custom stores. Use separate sources for Arabic and English.
Fix everything under Needs attention on the Products page before adding more products.
Link your Google Business Profile if you also have a shop customers can visit, and link Google Ads when you are ready for Shopping campaigns (Merchant Center Help). Our Google Business Profile guide covers the profile itself.
Track clicks from free listings in Merchant Center and in Google Analytics, and keep the feed updating automatically, at least daily, so prices and stock never drift from the site.
Common reasons products are disapproved
- The price or stock in the feed does not match the product page, often after a sale or when a script updates the price late.
- Links that go to the homepage or a category page instead of the product.
- An English feed pointing to Arabic pages, or the other way round.
- Images with logos, promotional text or watermarks, or images that are too small.
- Missing GTIN or brand on branded products.
- A checkout that forces account sign-up or an app download, or has no SSL certificate.
- Products that are restricted or prohibited under Google's policies.

( FAQ )
Questions people ask.
Is Google Merchant Center available in Oman?
Yes. Google lists Oman as a supported target country for Shopping ads and free listings, with the Omani rial (OMR) as the currency. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait are also supported with their own currencies.
Are Google free product listings really free?
Yes. Free listings cost nothing and new Merchant Center accounts are opted in by default. Google decides when to show them, so being eligible does not guarantee your products will appear. Shopping ads are the paid option using the same product data.
Is the Google Shopping tab available in Oman?
Google's supported-countries table does not mark Oman as a country where the Shopping tab is available to users, while Saudi Arabia and the UAE are marked. Products from Omani stores can still appear in Google Search, Images, Lens, YouTube and Gemini.
Can I list products in Arabic?
Yes. Arabic is a supported language. The feed's language must match the landing page, so a bilingual store should use one product source in Arabic linking to Arabic pages and another in English linking to English pages.
Do I need a Shopify store to use Merchant Center?
No. Any online store where customers can buy works. Shopify and other platforms have Google integrations that send products automatically; custom stores can upload a feed file or use Google's Merchant API.
Why were my products disapproved?
The most common reasons are a price or stock mismatch between the feed and the product page, links that do not go to the product page, images with promotional text, missing GTIN or brand, and checkout problems such as no guest checkout or no SSL.
Do I still need Product structured data if I use Merchant Center?
It is recommended. Google reads product details from your pages as well as from Merchant Center, and Product markup with price, currency and availability helps your pages qualify for merchant listing results in Search and Images.
Can my products appear in Google's AI answers?
Google lists Gemini among the places where free listings can appear, and uses product data in its AI-powered experiences. An accurate catalogue with correct prices, stock, shipping and returns gives your products the best chance.
