Shopify, headless or custom: choosing an ecommerce platform in the Gulf

Shopify is the right platform for most brands in the Gulf going online: it launches fastest, handles Arabic through right-to-left themes, and connects to regional payment gateways and cash on delivery through apps. A headless storefront makes sense when the brand needs a unique front end on Shopify's back office. A custom platform is for unusual catalogues, B2B pricing or marketplace models. OGB Labs, a website and ecommerce development company in Muscat, Oman, builds all three for brands in Oman, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

What is different about ecommerce in the Gulf

  • Cash on delivery is still a common payment choice, so the checkout must support it and the operations must handle returns of unpaid orders.
  • Local gateways matter: Thawani and OmanNet debit cards in Oman, PayTabs, Telr, Network International and, from July 2026, the Jaywan national card in the UAE (see payment gateways in the UAE), Mada, HyperPay and Moyasar in Saudi Arabia (see payment gateways in Saudi Arabia and Shopify in Saudi Arabia). Buy-now-pay-later services such as Tabby and Tamara are widely used in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. For Oman, see our guide to payment gateways in Oman.
  • Arabic is not optional for consumer brands. Product names, sizes, checkout labels and emails all need a right-to-left version.
  • Delivery is by regional couriers with their own APIs and tracking, and same-day delivery expectations in the big cities.
  • WhatsApp is often the customer service channel, so order updates and support belong there as much as in email.

Choose Shopify when

This is the route most new stores take. In Oman it is our Shopify store development service, and the steps around it, from licence to couriers, are in how to start an online store in Oman.

  • You sell physical products with standard variants such as size and colour.
  • You want to launch in one to two weeks, from OMR 100, and let your team run the store without a developer.
  • Your integrations are covered by existing apps: gateways, couriers, accounting, reviews.

Choose headless when

  • The brand experience is the product: editorial layouts, motion, lookbooks, unusual navigation.
  • You need the storefront inside a larger site or app built on Next.js.
  • You still want Shopify's checkout, inventory and admin behind it.

Choose custom when

  • Pricing depends on the customer: B2B tiers, contracts, quotes.
  • The catalogue does not fit products and variants: configurators, subscriptions, services, rentals.
  • You are building a marketplace with many sellers.
  • Data must stay in a specific country or system for regulatory reasons.

What each option costs

The build prices in the table above are explained line by line in our guide to ecommerce website cost in Oman and the Gulf. All three options are delivered under our ecommerce development service, and Omani brands can start from the ecommerce website development in Oman page.

( FAQ )

Questions people ask.

Can Shopify take cash on delivery in Oman and the UAE?

Yes. Cash on delivery is one of the manual payment methods in Shopify, and courier apps can handle the collection.

Does Shopify support Arabic?

Yes. Shopify supports Arabic storefronts through its translation features, and its help centre says the latest versions of its Horizon themes support right-to-left languages such as Arabic. With any other theme, confirm right-to-left support before you buy it.

Can the store sync with our POS or ERP?

Yes. Shopify has apps and APIs for most systems, and headless or custom builds integrate directly.

Can we migrate from another platform?

Yes. Products, customers and order history can be moved from most platforms.

Do we need a mobile app as well?

Not at first. A fast mobile website converts well. A companion app is worth it once you have repeat customers who would use it.

Does Shopify Payments work in the Gulf?

Only in part. The United Arab Emirates is on Shopify's list of supported countries for Shopify Payments; Oman and Saudi Arabia are not (checked October 2026). Stores there use a third-party gateway.
