How to build a multivendor marketplace in Oman: platform, payments, vendors and cost drivers
By OGB Labs · Published
Choose the business model first
A marketplace earns money from its sellers, its buyers or both. The model decides what the platform must calculate, so settle it before you pick software. Most marketplaces combine more than one.
- Commission: the operator keeps a percentage or a fixed amount of each sale. It needs commission rules and split or calculated payouts.
- Subscription: sellers pay a monthly or yearly fee to sell. It needs seller plans and recurring billing.
- Listing fee: sellers pay per product listed or per featured placement. It needs paid listings and promotion slots.
Must-have features
- Vendor sign-up and verification: commercial registration, ID and bank details, approved by the operator.
- A catalogue per vendor, with its own products, stock, prices and seller page.
- Commission rules by category, seller or plan.
- Split payouts and settlement statements for every seller.
- Per-vendor orders, shipping, cancellations and returns, so one basket can become several shipments.
- A vendor dashboard for orders, stock, earnings and payouts.
- Admin moderation of sellers, listings, reviews and disputes.
- Reviews and ratings for products and sellers.
- Search and filters across all sellers.
Choosing a platform
Shopify does not support many sellers by itself, so a marketplace app adds them. The Webkul MultiVendor Marketplace app is one example, with seller dashboards and commission management, and plans from 15 US dollars a month for 3 active sellers to 60 US dollars a month for unlimited sellers (checked October 2026). For headless and custom builds, Medusa's marketplace recipe shows how vendors, vendor logins and one order per vendor are added to its framework as a customisation. See also our comparison of Shopify, headless and custom stores.
| Criteria | Shopify with a marketplace app | Headless storefront on a commerce back end | Fully custom platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor features | Limited to what the app offers | Built on the back end | Built for your model |
| Commission and payout rules | App settings | Custom | Custom |
| Design freedom | Theme-based | Complete | Complete |
| Running cost | Shopify plan plus app fees | Hosting plus any back-end licence | Hosting plus care |
| Suits | Testing the idea with few sellers | A branded marketplace experience | Unusual rules, many sellers, full ownership |
Payments and payouts in Oman
The gateway must accept Omani debit cards. The Central Bank of Oman runs a national payment gateway for debit cards issued in Oman, and our guide to payment gateways in Oman compares the providers.
Then decide how sellers are paid. There are two ways, and the platform is built differently for each.
- Gateway split. The gateway divides each payment between the operator and the sellers. MyFatoorah, which lists Oman among its markets, documents a multi-vendor feature that must be activated by its account team and splits payments by supplier share and commission. Tap documents a marketplace product with splits and payouts to verified retailers, and accepts OmanNet in OMR. Telr documents split payments to sub-merchants, by percentage or flat amount, with weekly or monthly payouts. These pages do not name Oman for the split feature, so get written confirmation from the provider (checked October 2026).
- Operator payouts. The operator collects everything and pays sellers by bank transfer. Thawani's gateway page and Amwal Pay's site do not mention split payments (checked October 2026), so with them the platform calculates each seller's balance, holds it for the return period and exports payout reports.
- Cash on delivery. When couriers collect cash for several sellers, the platform records who collected what and deducts it from the right payout.
Licensing and VAT basics
This section is general information, not legal or tax advice, as of October 2026.
Licence. Ministerial Decision 499/2023 says e-commerce may not be practised without a licence (Article 2) and that payments must go through a bank or payment provider licensed in Oman (Article 10). It sets no separate rules for platforms that host other sellers, so ask the Ministry whether your sellers need licences of their own. The steps are in our guide to the e-commerce licence in Oman.
VAT. The Oman Tax Authority's e-commerce taxpayer guide.pdf/70d52b04-4177-2fe8-2d1c-836d6d831466?t=1733169614944) says a marketplace that sells in the seller's name is an agent: the seller stays responsible for VAT on the sale, and the commission is a separate service taxed at 5%. A marketplace that sells in its own name is treated as the supplier of the goods. Confirm your model with a tax adviser before you design invoices. Our guide to Oman VAT registration for online sellers covers the thresholds.
Launch steps
Write the model in one page
Who sells, who buys, how you earn, and who ships.
Get the commercial registration and e-commerce licence, and open a business bank account.
Choose the gateway and confirm in writing how seller payouts will work.
Settle the VAT model with your adviser and draft the seller agreement.
Choose the platform and agree a fixed price and timeline after discovery.
Sign up your first sellers before launch and load their products.
Run a vendor pilot
Real orders, refunds, cash on delivery and a full payout cycle.
Open to buyers, then add sellers in waves.
Cost drivers
There is no standard marketplace price. OGB Labs quotes each one as a fixed price in OMR after discovery. What moves the price:
- The platform route: Shopify with an app, headless or fully custom.
- The payout model: gateway split or operator-managed payouts with balances and reports.
- Commission and fee rules, especially if you combine commission, subscriptions and listing fees.
- Shipping: one courier or several, and per-vendor pickup, tracking and returns.
- The vendor dashboard and admin tools you need on day one.
- Integrations such as accounting, ERP or seller stock feeds.
- Data migration from an existing store.
Common mistakes
- Launching without enough sellers. Buyers leave an empty marketplace, so sign up and load sellers before launch.
- Manual payouts that do not scale. Spreadsheets work for a handful of sellers and break with many; plan for split payments or automated balances.
- Leaving the VAT model to the end. It decides the invoices and the seller agreement.
- No clear rules for returns and disputes between buyer, seller and operator.

How much does a multivendor marketplace cost?
OGB Labs quotes each marketplace as a fixed price in OMR after discovery. The price depends on the platform, payout model, commission rules, shipping and integrations.
How long does it take to build a marketplace?
It is agreed after discovery, once the platform, payout model and integrations are known.
Which payment gateways in Oman support split payments?
MyFatoorah, Tap and Telr document split or multi-vendor features, but their pages do not name Oman for them, so confirm with the provider. Thawani and Amwal Pay do not mention split payments on their sites (checked October 2026). See payment gateways in Oman.
Can a marketplace run on Shopify?
Yes, with a marketplace app that adds sellers, commissions and seller dashboards. It suits testing the idea with a small number of sellers.
Do sellers on my marketplace need their own e-commerce licence?
The regulation does not address platforms that host other sellers, so confirm with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. See the e-commerce licence in Oman.
Who owns the marketplace platform?
You do. OGB Labs hands over the code, accounts and data in your company's name.
