What goes wrong when nobody maintains a site
- Outdated plugins and themes are the usual way small business sites get hacked. Google's guidance on security issues explains that hacked sites can be flagged and lose visitors and search visibility until they are cleaned.
- A contact form or WhatsApp button breaks after an update and nobody notices for weeks, so leads silently stop.
- The SSL certificate expires and browsers show a security warning, or the .om domain lapses and the site and email go down together.
- Pages get slower as large images and tracking scripts pile up. Google uses Core Web Vitals as part of its page experience signals, and slow mobile pages lose visitors before they load.
- Prices, offers and staff on the site go out of date, and customers or AI assistants repeat the wrong information.
- When the person who built the site leaves, nobody has the logins for the domain, hosting or CMS.
A monthly maintenance checklist
Apply updates on a staging copy first, test the key pages, forms and checkout, then update the live site.
Confirm last night's backup exists and is stored off the server; once a quarter, restore it to a test environment.
Check uptime and error logs for the month, and the expiry dates of the SSL certificate and domain.
Submit every form, click the WhatsApp and call buttons, and place a test order if the site sells online.
Open Search Console
Fix new crawl, indexing and mobile issues, and check which pages gained or lost clicks.
Run a speed test on the home page and the top landing pages on a mobile connection, and fix regressions.
Update content that changed
Prices, offers, hours, team, and Arabic versions of every change.
Review admin users, remove people who left, and confirm two-factor login is on.
Send a short report to the business owner.
Maintenance depends on how the site was built
A WordPress site with a page builder and many plugins needs the most maintenance: each plugin is a separate piece of software to update and a possible point of failure. A Shopify store moves platform updates and hosting to Shopify, but apps, theme changes, products and policies still need care. A modern site built on a framework such as Next.js with a headless CMS and static hosting has fewer moving parts on the live server, so security work shifts to keeping dependencies and the CMS current. When you compare quotes for a new site, ask what it will need each month, not only what it costs to build. Our guide to website cost in Oman covers build budgets and running costs.
How to compare website care plans in Oman
- Scope: exactly what is monitored, updated and tested each month, in writing.
- Backups: how often, where they are stored, how long they are kept, and when a restore was last tested.
- Response times: how quickly an urgent issue, such as the site being down or checkout failing, is handled, including on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Change hours: how many hours of content and design changes are included, and the rate beyond them.
- Both languages: whether Arabic changes are included and done by someone who writes Arabic well.
- Ownership: the domain, hosting account, CMS and code should be in your company's name, with the agency given access, so you can leave without losing the site.
- Reporting: a monthly summary you can read in two minutes.
- Notice period: a plan you can cancel with reasonable notice, and a clean handover of access if you do.
Maintenance that also grows the business
The best care plans do more than keep the lights on. The same monthly hours can publish a new service page, answer a question customers keep asking on WhatsApp, refresh a guide, add reviews and structured data, and keep the Google Business Profile in step with the site. Over a year that steady work is what moves a site up in Google and makes it citable by AI assistants, as our guide to SEO in Oman explains. Keeping privacy notices and consent current also matters now that Oman's Personal Data Protection Law is enforced.

( FAQ )
Questions people ask.
What does website maintenance include?
Security and software updates, daily backups with tested restores, uptime, SSL and domain monitoring, speed checks, fixing Search Console errors, testing forms and checkout, and small content changes such as prices and opening hours, with a monthly report.
How often should a website be updated?
Security updates monthly, and critical patches within days. Content should change whenever the business does, and adding a useful page every month or two helps search rankings.
What is a website care plan?
A monthly service with a fixed scope that covers maintenance, monitoring and a set number of hours for changes, with an agreed response time for urgent issues, so small changes do not become new projects.
Do I need maintenance for a Shopify store?
Less than for WordPress, because Shopify handles hosting and platform updates. Apps, theme changes, products, policies, speed and SEO still need regular attention.
What happens if my .om domain expires?
The website and any email on that domain stop working until it is renewed, and after the registrar's grace period someone else may be able to register it. Keep auto-renewal on and the registrar account in your company's name.
Can you maintain a website another company built?
Usually yes. A good agency first audits the site, collects all logins for the domain, hosting and CMS, takes a full backup, and then agrees a care plan.
Is website maintenance worth it for a small business?
If the site brings enquiries, yes. One unnoticed broken form, expired certificate or hacked page can cost more in lost leads and recovery than a year of maintenance.
Who should own my website's hosting and domain?
Your company. The agency should have access, not ownership, so you keep the site if you change provider.
