.om or .com? How to register a .om domain for a business in Oman

.om or .com: what each one does
A .om domain tells customers and search engines that the business is in Oman. A .com is neutral and works in every market. You can hold both and use one as the main address.

Who can register which .om extension
The rules are in the Regulation Governing Domain Names, issued by TRA Decision 1152/2/3/2022-5 and listed on the TRA's domain name regulations page. The TRA also runs an Arabic top-level domain, .عمان, open to Omanis and to entities licensed in Oman.

How to register a .om domain, step by step
Check that the name is free on the TRA's domain search. It covers .om, .com.om, .co.om and the other extensions.
Pick a registrar from the TRA's accredited registrars list. In October 2026 it names six, including Omantel, Ooredoo, Oman Data Park, Cloud Acropolis and Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property.
Submit the registrar's application form in the company's name. The regulation does not list the documents; the registrar's form does. Have your commercial registration ready, because it shows the company is licensed in Oman.
The registrar registers the name when it receives the request and checks the documents within 24 hours. If something is missing you have three days to supply it, or the name is deleted.
Choose a period of one to five years and pay the fee.
Point the domain at your website and email by setting its DNS records.
Put the renewal date in the company calendar. After expiry the TRA may allow up to 30 extra days, then the name is suspended for up to 30 days, then the registration ends.
What a .om domain costs
The regulation sets one fee for every extension: OMR 5 per year to register or renew. A registrar may add its own operating charge, which cannot exceed 100% of that fee without the TRA's approval. Ooredoo, an accredited registrar, lists an annual fee of RO 10 with no setup fee on its domain registration page. Ask your registrar for its current total.
Moving a domain from one registrant to another costs OMR 25, or OMR 50 for a premium name, paid by the new registrant. A registrar may not charge you for moving the domain to another accredited registrar. These fees and rules were checked in October 2026 and change over time.
Does a .om domain help you rank in Oman?
Google's documentation on multi-regional sites says country-code domains "provide a strong signal to both users and search engines" that a site is intended for that country. It lists the trade-off too: a country-code domain can only target a single country.
Google does not say a .om domain is a ranking boost. It names other signals it uses to work out a site's audience: hreflang tags, server location, local addresses and phone numbers on the pages, local language and currency, links from other local sites, and the Business Profile. A .com with a Muscat address, Omani rial prices, Arabic pages and a Google Business Profile can rank in Oman. What a .om adds is a clear country signal and local trust.
Holding both, ownership, DNS and email
- Hold both. Register the .om and the .com, choose one as the main address, and redirect the other to it with a permanent redirect so search engines see one site.
- The company is the registrant. Register in the company's name with a company email address, never in the name of an agency or an employee. The same rule applies to hosting and code, as our guide to choosing a web development company in Oman explains.
- Keep the domain password. The registry issues one to the registrant, and it is needed to change details or move the domain.
- If an agency holds your domain, the current registrant asks the registrar to transfer it, with the password, and you confirm in writing that you accept.
- DNS. Point the domain at your hosting and check the site loads with and without www, over HTTPS.
- Email. Add your mail provider's MX records, plus SPF, DKIM and DMARC records so company email is not marked as spam.

Can a foreign company register a .om domain?

Is .om better than .com for SEO in Oman?
Google says a country-code domain is a strong signal that a site targets that country. It is not a guarantee of ranking: local address, language, currency, local links and a Business Profile count too.
Can I register an Arabic domain ending in .عمان?
Yes. The TRA runs .عمان alongside .om. It is open to Omanis and to entities licensed in Oman, and the name must be written in Arabic letters.
