Google reviews for businesses in Oman: how to get more, reply well, and deal with fake or unfair reviews
By OGB Labs · Published

Why Google reviews matter for Omani businesses
When someone in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa or Salalah searches for a clinic, a car service centre or a restaurant, the first thing they compare in the map results is usually the star rating and the number of reviews. Reviews show next to your Business Profile on Google Maps and Search (Google), so they shape the click before your website is even seen.
They also feed ranking. Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence draws on information such as how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have: "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking" (Google). Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Reviews are earned, not bought.
The same reviews are read by AI tools. Assistants that answer questions like "best dental clinic in Al Khuwair" draw on business listings and what customers say about them. A steady stream of genuine, detailed reviews, answered by the owner, is one of the clearest trust signals a local business can show to both people and machines. Our guide to Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in Oman explains how those answers are built.
How the star rating is calculated
- Your score is the average of all ratings published on Google for your business, on a scale of 1 to 5 stars (Google).
- After a new review, the updated score can take up to two weeks to appear.
- New reviews are checked against Google's policies first, which can delay them by a few days (Google).
- Some profiles also show reviews from other websites, such as travel or local review sites. You cannot choose or block those sources; issues with them go to the other website (Google).
- For some service businesses, customers can rate specific aspects such as price and pick the job you did, which Google takes from your service list. Keep your services list complete so the right jobs appear in reviews (Google).
Step by step: set up a review request link
Verify your Business Profile. Google only lets verified businesses reply to reviews (Google). If you have not set up the profile yet, follow our Google Business Profile guide for Oman first.
On a computer, open your Business Profile and select Read reviews, then Get more reviews. Google says the review QR code can only be generated in a computer browser, not on a phone (Google).
Copy the review link and save the QR code image.
Add the link to your WhatsApp Business quick replies and to the message you send when a job is finished or an order is delivered. Google itself suggests WhatsApp, email and Facebook as ways to send review requests.
Print the QR code for the counter, the invoice, the delivery bag or the clinic reception, and add the link to email receipts and the end of chat conversations.
Tell customers they need to be signed in to a Google account to leave a review, and that it can be created with any email address, not only Gmail (Google).
What you must not do: Google's fake engagement rules
Google's Maps content policy says a review should reflect an actual experience with the business and be genuine and unbiased (Google). These practices are common in the region and all of them are against the policy:
- Offering anything in return for a review: payment, a discount, a free item or service, entry into a draw. This applies to posting a review, changing one, or removing a negative one.
- Asking only customers you expect to be happy, or filtering customers through a "were you satisfied?" step and sending the Google link only to those who say yes. Google forbids discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones.
- Pressuring customers to leave a review while they are still on your premises, or asking them to include specific words, such as a staff member's name.
- Giving staff a target number of reviews to collect, or asking staff to collect reviews that mention themselves.
- Reviews from employees, former employees, family members, business partners or competitors, which Google treats as a conflict of interest.
- Buying reviews from agencies, posting from several accounts, or posting on a competitor's profile to harm it.
What happens if Google finds fake reviews
Google removes the reviews that break the policy. If it decides the business owner was involved, it can also restrict the profile (Google). The examples Google lists are that the profile cannot receive new reviews or ratings for a set period, that existing reviews are unpublished for a set period, and that the profile shows a warning telling customers that fake reviews were removed. Google notifies owners by email before applying a restriction, and the business can appeal.
For a clinic, a restaurant or a real estate agency in Oman, a public warning on Google Maps costs far more than a few extra stars ever bring in. Any agency that offers "Google reviews packages" is selling exactly what Google penalises.
How to reply to reviews, in Arabic and English
Reply from your profile: select Read reviews, then Reply next to the review. Google checks replies against its content policies before posting them, which usually takes up to 10 minutes and can take up to 30 days. Replies appear under the business name, not your personal name, and the reviewer is notified and can still change their review afterwards (Google).
Google's own tips are to be professional and polite, keep it short, avoid copying the same thank-you to everyone, and not use replies to promote deals (Google). For Omani businesses we add one rule: reply in the language the customer used. An Arabic review deserves an Arabic reply, written by someone who writes Arabic well, not machine-translated.
- Positive review: thank the person by name, mention the specific thing they liked, and add one useful detail, such as a new branch or service.
- Negative review: apologise where it is fair, explain what you can and cannot do, and invite them to continue by phone or WhatsApp. Google advises not to accept blame for things outside your control and never to share the reviewer's private information or attack them.
- Health and legal businesses: never confirm in a public reply that someone is a patient or client, or mention any detail of their case. Respond in general terms and take it to a private channel. Our PDPL compliance guide covers how Oman's personal data law treats customer information.
- Reply promptly. Google lists timely responses among its tips, and a fast reply often turns an angry customer into an updated review.
How to report fake, abusive or off-topic reviews
You can report any review, but Google only removes those that break its policies, and says it does not get involved in disputes between a business and its customers (Google). A one-star review from a real customer you disagree with is not removable. Spam, profanity, reviews of the wrong business, conflict-of-interest reviews and fake engagement are.
Open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, and next to the review select Report.
Choose the reason, such as Spam or Profanity, and send the report. Google says evaluation typically takes several days.
Check the status in Google's Reviews Management Tool: Decision pending, Report reviewed - no policy violation, or Escalated - check your email for updates.
If the review was not removed and you still believe it breaks the policy, submit the one-time appeal from the same tool. You can appeal up to 10 reviews at a time, and Google emails the result.
If a reviewer's whole account is posting fake content, report the user profile from the Google Maps app.
Review extortion: what to do if someone demands money
Google describes a scam in which a business suddenly receives a wave of one-star and two-star reviews, followed by a message demanding money, goods or services to remove them (Google). These messages often arrive on WhatsApp or Telegram.
- Do not reply to, negotiate with or pay the sender. Google says paying encourages more attempts and does not guarantee the reviews come down.
- Take screenshots straight away showing the demand, the date and time, and the sender's number, email or profile.
- Copy the direct link to each suspicious review: in Google Maps, select More on the review, then Share review.
- Submit Google's merchant extortion report form with your contact details, the profile link, the reviews and the evidence. Google investigates and tells you the outcome.
- Keep a record of when the reviews started and when the demand arrived, in case you also report it to the Royal Oman Police.
Reviews are missing or disappeared: common reasons
- The review is still being checked and will appear after a few days (Google).
- Google's automated spam detection removed it. Google admits this occasionally removes genuine reviews; you can contact Business Profile support (Google).
- You merged two profiles, and it takes a few days for reviews from both to show.
- The customer's Maps app is out of date.
- Reviews removed for policy violations are not restored.
- Your category has reviews limited. Google has disabled reviews for profiles primarily categorised as schools for students aged 6 to 18; universities, nurseries and activity schools are not affected.
Showing your Google reviews on your own website
Putting real reviews on your service pages helps visitors decide, and you can link to individual reviews using Share review in Google Maps. But do not expect review stars in Google's results for your own business. Google's review snippet rules say that if the business being reviewed controls the reviews about itself, its pages with LocalBusiness or Organization markup are not eligible for star results, including reviews shown through an embedded Google or Facebook reviews widget (Google for Developers).
Stars can still appear for product pages with genuine product reviews. For a service business, show reviews as testimonials, keep the markup honest, and let the Business Profile carry the star rating in Maps. Heavy third-party review widgets can also slow pages down; our Core Web Vitals guide explains what to measure.

( FAQ )
Questions people ask.
How do I get more Google reviews for my business in Oman?
Create the review link and QR code from your Business Profile on a computer, then send the link on WhatsApp and receipts right after every completed job or delivery, to all customers. Reply to the reviews you get. Do not offer anything in exchange.
Can I offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's policy forbids offering payment, discounts, free goods or services for posting, changing or removing a review. Google removes such reviews and can restrict the profile.
Can I ask only happy customers for a review?
No. Google does not allow businesses to selectively solicit positive reviews or discourage negative ones. Send the same request to every customer.
How do I remove a fake Google review?
Report it from your Business Profile (Read reviews, then Report) and choose the reason. Track it in the Reviews Management Tool and use the one-time appeal if it stays. Only reviews that break Google's policies are removed.
Will Google remove a negative review that is unfair?
Only if it breaks Google's content policy, for example spam, profanity, a conflict of interest or not based on a real experience. Google says it does not get involved in disputes between businesses and customers. Reply calmly instead.
Someone is threatening one-star reviews unless I pay. What should I do?
Do not pay or engage. Screenshot the messages with dates and sender details, collect links to the reviews, and submit Google's merchant extortion report form.
Should I reply to Google reviews in Arabic?
Reply in the language the review was written in. Arabic reviews should get a well-written Arabic reply, not a machine translation.
Do Google reviews help my ranking on Google Maps?
Yes. Google says prominence is based partly on how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, alongside relevance and distance.
Why are my Google reviews not showing?
New reviews are checked first and can take a few days. Others may have been removed by spam detection, be delayed after a profile merge, or be limited for your category. Removed policy-violating reviews are not restored.
Can I show star ratings from my Google reviews in search results for my website?
Not for your own business. Google's rules say self-serving reviews on a business's own site, including embedded Google review widgets, are not eligible for star results with LocalBusiness or Organization markup.
