# Multivendor marketplace development in Oman

> OGB Labs is a website and ecommerce development company in Muscat, Oman, and we build multivendor marketplaces: one store where many sellers list and sell their products. We build the parts a marketplace needs on top of a normal store: vendor sign-up and verification, commission rules, split payouts to sellers, per-vendor orders and shipping, vendor dashboards and admin moderation. We build on Shopify with a marketplace app, as a headless storefront on a commerce back end, or as a fully custom platform. You get a fixed price in OMR after discovery, and the platform and code are yours.

## Key facts

- Team: Muscat
- Platforms: Shopify app, headless or custom
- Price: Fixed in OMR, after discovery
- Ownership: Platform and code in your name

## What a multivendor marketplace needs

- Vendor sign-up and verification: commercial registration and bank details, approved by the operator.
- A catalogue per vendor, with its own products, stock, prices and seller page.
- Commission rules: a percentage or fixed fee per sale, by category, seller or plan.
- Split payouts and settlement: the buyer pays once, and each seller gets its share with a statement.
- Per-vendor orders, shipping and returns: one basket from three sellers becomes three tracked shipments.
- A vendor dashboard for orders, stock, earnings and payouts.
- Admin moderation of sellers, listings, disputes and accounts.
- Reviews and ratings for products and sellers.
- Search and filters across all sellers.

## Platform options for a marketplace

The right route depends on how many sellers you expect, how unusual your rules are and how much you want to own. See also [Shopify, headless and custom stores](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/shopify-vs-custom-ecommerce-gulf) compared.

Shopify does not handle many sellers on its own, so a marketplace app adds them, such as the [Webkul MultiVendor Marketplace app](https://apps.shopify.com/multi-vendor-marketplace), with plans from 15 to 60 US dollars a month depending on the number of sellers (checked October 2026). On a headless or custom build, [Medusa's marketplace recipe](https://docs.medusajs.com/resources/recipes/marketplace) shows how vendors and one order per vendor are added, as a customisation rather than a ready-made marketplace.

**Three ways to build a marketplace in Oman**

| | Shopify with a marketplace app | Headless storefront on a commerce back end | Fully custom platform |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| How vendors are added | Through the app's seller features | Vendor modules built on the back end | Built for your model |
| Commission and payout rules | What the app supports | Custom | Custom |
| Design freedom | Theme-based | Complete | Complete |
| Running cost | Shopify plan plus app fees | Hosting plus any back-end licence | Hosting plus care |
| Suits | Testing the idea with a small number of sellers | A branded marketplace that needs its own experience | Unusual rules, large seller numbers or full ownership |

## Payments and vendor payouts in Oman

- Omani debit cards first. The Central Bank of Oman runs [a national payment gateway for debit cards issued in Oman](https://cbo.gov.om/Pages/PaymentSystemReforms.aspx), so the gateway must accept them. Our guide to [payment gateways in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/payment-gateways-oman) compares Thawani, Amwal Pay, Paymob and bank gateways.
- Split payments are not offered by every gateway. MyFatoorah, which lists Oman among [its markets](https://www.myfatoorah.com/), documents a [multi-vendor feature](https://docs.myfatoorah.com/docs/multiple-suppliers) that splits each payment by seller share and commission. Tap documents a [marketplace product](https://developers.tap.company/docs/marketplace-overview) with splits and seller payouts, and [accepts OmanNet in OMR](https://developers.tap.company/docs/omannet). Telr documents [split payments to sub-merchants](https://docs.telr.com/reference/onboarding-submerchant). None of these pages names Oman for the split feature, so confirm it with the provider (checked October 2026).
- Thawani's [payment gateway page](https://thawani.om/payment-gateway) and [Amwal Pay's site](https://amwalpay.om/) do not mention split payments (checked October 2026). With them, the operator collects and pays sellers itself, so the platform calculates each seller's balance.
- Cash on delivery across vendors. The platform records cash collected for each seller and deducts it from the next payout.

## Licence and VAT for a marketplace operator

Selling online in Oman needs an e-commerce licence. Article 2 of [Ministerial Decision 499/2023](https://qanoon.om/p/2023/mociip20230499/) says e-commerce may not be practised without one, and Article 10 requires payments through a bank or payment provider licensed in Oman. The regulation does not set separate rules for platforms that host other sellers, so ask the Ministry whether each of your sellers needs its own licence. Our guide to the [e-commerce licence in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/ecommerce-licence-oman) covers the application and Maroof Oman.

For VAT, the Oman Tax Authority's [e-commerce taxpayer guide](https://tms.taxoman.gov.om/portal/documents/20126/1414820/VAT+Taxpayer+Guide+(Electronic+Commerce).pdf/70d52b04-4177-2fe8-2d1c-836d6d831466?t=1733169614944) separates two models. If the marketplace sells in the seller's name, the seller stays responsible for VAT on the sale and the marketplace's commission is a separate service taxed at 5%. If the marketplace sells in its own name, it is treated as the supplier of the goods. Confirm your model with a tax adviser before build. This is general information as of October 2026, not legal or tax advice.

## How a marketplace project runs

The timeline is agreed after discovery, because it depends on the platform and the payout model.

1. Discovery: your sellers, commission model, payment and payout flow, couriers and VAT model. You receive a fixed price in OMR and a timeline.
2. Design: buyer, seller and admin journeys, approved before build.
3. Build: storefront, vendor sign-up, vendor dashboard, commissions, payouts, shipping and admin tools.
4. Vendor pilot: a small group of real sellers lists products and runs test orders, payouts and refunds.
5. Launch: open to buyers and further sellers, with monitoring and a monthly care plan after go-live.

## What a marketplace costs

OGB Labs has no published marketplace price. Each marketplace is quoted as a fixed price in OMR after discovery. For context, our published ecommerce tiers are a Shopify store from OMR 100, a headless storefront from OMR 2,450 and a fully custom platform from OMR 3,200. Those are single-brand stores. A marketplace adds vendor features on top, so it needs its own quote.

The main cost drivers are the platform, the payout model, the commission rules, couriers and integrations, the vendor dashboard and the number of sellers at launch. Our guide on [how to build a multivendor marketplace in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/multivendor-marketplace-oman) explains each. For single-brand stores, see [ecommerce development in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/locations/oman/ecommerce-development), [Shopify stores in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/locations/oman/shopify) or our [ecommerce service](https://www.ogblabs.com/services/ecommerce).

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a multivendor marketplace cost in Oman?

We quote each marketplace as a fixed price in OMR after discovery. Our published single-brand tiers start from OMR 100 on Shopify, OMR 2,450 headless and OMR 3,200 fully custom, and a marketplace adds vendor features on top.

### How long does it take to build a marketplace?

The timeline is agreed after discovery, once the platform, payout model and integrations are known.

### Should a marketplace be built on Shopify or custom?

Shopify with a marketplace app suits testing the idea with a small number of sellers. A headless or fully custom build suits a branded experience, unusual commission rules or many sellers.

### How do vendors get paid?

Either the gateway splits each payment between you and the seller, or you collect the payment and the platform calculates each seller's balance for payouts. See [payment gateways in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/payment-gateways-oman).

### Who owns the platform and the code?

You do. The code, the accounts, the domain and the data are in your company's name.

### Can you turn our existing store into a marketplace?

Yes. We migrate products, customers and order history from your current platform, then add vendor features.

### Do you integrate local couriers?

Yes. We connect couriers that Omani stores commonly use, such as Asyad Express and Aramex, with tracking per vendor shipment.
