# Structured data (schema markup) for business websites in Oman: what still works on Google in 2026, and what changed

> Structured data, often called schema markup, is a block of code (usually JSON-LD) that tells Google in a fixed format what a page is about: your business name, address in Muscat, phone number with +968, opening hours, products and prices in OMR. For an Omani business website in 2026 the markup worth adding is Organization and WebSite on the home page, the most specific LocalBusiness type (for example Dentist, Restaurant or AutoRepair) on each branch or contact page, BreadcrumbList across the site, Article on guides and blog posts, and Product with an Offer in OMR on store pages. Two things changed. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026 and removed their documentation in June 2026, so FAQ markup no longer produces the drop-down questions in search results. And Google says structured data is not required for AI Overviews and AI Mode and that there is no special schema to add for them, although the markup must match the visible text. Markup never guarantees a rich result, and stars from reviews of your own business are not eligible. This guide from OGB Labs, an SEO and web development company in Muscat, is based on Google Search Central documentation.

## What structured data does for an Omani business website

Google describes structured data as "a standardized format for providing information about a page and classifying the page content" ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/intro-structured-data)). Instead of guessing from your page layout which number is the phone and which text is the address, Google reads a labelled block: this is the business name, this is the street address in Al Khuwair, these are the opening hours.

It does three jobs. It can make a page eligible for rich results, the search listings with extra elements such as breadcrumbs, product prices or a logo. It helps Google understand and disambiguate your organisation, which feeds the knowledge panel. And it gives every machine that reads the page a clean, unambiguous statement of facts. Most of the vocabulary comes from schema.org, but Google says its own Search Central documentation, not schema.org, is the definitive guide to how Google Search behaves.

What it does not do is guarantee anything. Google states plainly that it does not guarantee your structured data will show up in search results, even if the markup is correct: structured data enables a feature, it does not guarantee it ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/sd-policies)).

## Structured data and AI search: what Google actually says

Many agencies now sell "AI schema" as the way to appear in Google's AI answers. Google's own guidance says otherwise. On its AI features page, Google says you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there is no special schema.org structured data to add ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). Its guide to generative AI search lists "overfocusing on structured data" as a mistake: structured data is not required for generative AI search, but it is still worth using as part of your SEO because it makes pages eligible for rich results ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide)).

The one AI-related rule Google gives is about accuracy: among its SEO best practices for AI features it lists making sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page, and keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date. For an Omani business, that means the hours, phone number and prices in your markup must be the same ones customers see on the page and on Google Maps.

So treat structured data as good housekeeping, not as an AI trick. The content itself, written clearly in English and Arabic, is what AI answers draw on. Our guides on [getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/get-cited-by-chatgpt-perplexity-google-ai) and [Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/google-ai-overviews-ai-mode-oman) cover that side.

## What changed: FAQ rich results ended in May 2026

For years, adding FAQPage markup was the standard advice to make a listing taller, with questions that expanded under the result. Google first limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites. Then it ended them: Google's changelog says the FAQ rich result "will no longer appear in Google Search starting May 7, 2026", and in June 2026 it removed the FAQ documentation because the feature is no longer shown ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/updates)). The deprecation notice on the old FAQ page also said the FAQ search appearance, report and Rich Results Test support would be dropped in June 2026, and Search Console API support in August 2026 ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/faqpage)).

This is not the only removal. In 2025 Google said it was simplifying results and phasing out several structured data features ([Google Search Central blog](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2025/06/simplifying-search-results)), and it later removed the documentation for course info, estimated salary, learning video, special announcement and vehicle listing, followed by practice problems in January 2026. Breadcrumb rich results are now listed as available on desktop.

- Keep a visible FAQ section on service pages if it answers real questions. It still helps visitors and gives AI tools clear question-and-answer text to read.
- FAQPage markup that matches the visible questions does no harm, but do not expect any special display in Google from it, and do not pay an agency for "FAQ schema to get more space in Google".
- Check the current list of supported features in Google's search gallery before you build anything new ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/search-gallery)).

## Which markup an Omani business website should use

**Structured data for business websites in Oman (November 2026)**

| Markup | Where it goes | What it can do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Organization | Home page or About page | Helps Google identify your company, its logo, legal name, contacts and identifiers, and can feed the knowledge panel |
| WebSite (site name) | Home page only | Tells Google which site name to show above your results |
| LocalBusiness, most specific type | Contact page and each branch page | Address, hours, phone and departments for your knowledge panel and local results |
| BreadcrumbList | Every inner page | Breadcrumb trail in results on desktop |
| Article | Guides, blog posts, news | Clearer title, image, author and dates in results |
| Product with Offer in OMR | Product pages of an online store | Price, availability and product details in Search and Shopping surfaces |
| FAQPage | Only where the questions are visible | No rich result in Google since 7 May 2026 |
| Review and AggregateRating | Product pages with genuine reviews | Star snippets for products; not for reviews of your own business |

## LocalBusiness markup done right for Oman

Google asks you to define each location as LocalBusiness and to use the most specific sub-type available, such as Restaurant, DaySpa or HealthClub ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/local-business)). In Oman that usually means types like Dentist, MedicalClinic, AutoRepair, RealEstateAgent, Hotel, Store or LegalService. If you offer several services, Google accepts several types as an array. Because LocalBusiness is a kind of Organization, Google recommends following the Organization fields as well.

- Name and address are the only required properties. Fill in the address as completely as possible: street or building and way number, area such as Al Khuwair or Ruwi, city in addressLocality, governorate in addressRegion, postal code, and OM as the country code.
- Telephone: give the number customers should use, with the country code, for example +968 followed by the eight-digit number. Use the same number as your Google Business Profile.
- Opening hours: Google uses openingHoursSpecification with days and times. Mark the Omani working week as it really is, for example Sunday to Thursday with shorter Saturday hours, and Friday closed or opening after prayers.
- Ramadan and Eid: Google supports seasonal hours with validFrom and validThrough dates, and hours that run past midnight, which suits Ramadan evening hours. Update them before each season, and update your Business Profile at the same time.
- Coordinates: Google asks for latitude and longitude with at least five decimal places. Copy them from your exact pin on Google Maps, not from the city centre.
- Branches: give each branch in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah or Nizwa its own page with its own LocalBusiness block and url, rather than one block listing every address on the home page.
- Departments: a showroom with a separate service centre or pharmacy can use the department property, with the store name in front of the department name.
- priceRange must be under 100 characters. A range in rial such as "OMR 10 to 30" is clearer to Omani visitors than dollar signs.

## Organization and site name: tell Google who you are

Organization markup has no required properties; Google recommends adding the ones that apply, with priority on your name, a real-world presence such as address or telephone, and an online presence such as url and logo ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/organization)). Put it on the home page or a single page that describes your company.

- name and alternateName: use the same names as your site name. An Arabic trading name is a natural alternateName.
- legalName: the registered name on your commercial registration, if it differs from the brand.
- logo: at least 112 by 112 pixels, crawlable, and checked on a white background, since Google may show it that way.
- sameAs: links to your profiles on other sites, such as Instagram, LinkedIn or a review site. List only profiles you control and keep active.
- vatID and taxID: Google calls the VAT number an important trust signal, and says taxID must match the country in your address. If you are VAT-registered in Oman, see our [Oman VAT registration guide](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/oman-vat-registration-online-sellers).
- contactPoint: phone and email for sales or support, with the country code.

## Site name, breadcrumbs and articles

Google shows a site name above each result. To state your preference, add WebSite structured data with name and, if useful, alternateName to the home page of the domain; Google says it must be on the domain or subdomain home page, that subdirectories are not supported, and that the name should match how you refer to the site elsewhere on the home page ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/site-names)).

BreadcrumbList describes where a page sits in your site, for example Home, Services, Dental implants. Google lists breadcrumb rich results as available on desktop ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/breadcrumb)). On guides and blog posts, Article markup has no required properties; the useful ones are headline, image, datePublished and dateModified with a time zone, and author with a url pointing to a real profile page ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/article)). Do not invent authors: Google's quality guidance treats fabricated author profiles as deceptive, as we explain in our guide to [AI-written content and SEO in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/ai-generated-content-seo-oman).

## Products, prices in OMR and review stars

Online stores in Oman should mark up each product page with Product and an Offer carrying the price and priceCurrency OMR, matching the price shown on the page and in your Merchant Center feed. Our guide to [Google Merchant Center and free listings in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/google-merchant-center-free-listings-oman) covers the product markup rules in detail.

Review stars are where most Omani sites go wrong. Google's review snippet rules say that when a business controls the reviews about itself, its pages with LocalBusiness or Organization markup are not eligible for star results, including reviews pulled in through an embedded Google or Facebook widget ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/review-snippet)). Product reviews from real buyers can still earn stars on product pages. Google also says that marking up fake reviews or ratings not by actual users can lead to a manual action ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/sd-policies)). Our guide to [Google reviews for Omani businesses](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/google-reviews-oman) explains how to collect genuine ones.

## Arabic and English pages

Structured data describes the page it sits on, and Google says not to mark up content that is not visible to readers ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/sd-policies)). On a bilingual site, that means the Arabic page carries markup in Arabic (business name as shown, Arabic description, Arabic article headline) and the English page carries English markup. Copying the English JSON-LD onto the Arabic page creates exactly the mismatch Google warns about.

Facts that do not change with language, such as the phone number, coordinates, opening hours, logo and prices in OMR, should be identical on both versions. Our [Arabic SEO guide for Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/arabic-seo-oman) covers hreflang and the rest of the bilingual setup.

## The rules that get markup ignored or penalised

- Hidden content: do not mark up anything visitors cannot see on the page, even if it is accurate.
- Misleading or irrelevant markup, such as fake reviews, a LocalBusiness address you do not operate from, or impersonating another organisation.
- Blocked pages: pages with structured data must not be blocked by robots.txt, noindex or logins.
- Missing required properties: items without them are not eligible for rich results. Fewer properties that are complete and accurate are better than many that are wrong ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/intro-structured-data)).
- Uncrawlable images: every image URL in the markup must be crawlable and indexable.
- A structured data manual action removes a page's eligibility for rich results; Google says it does not affect how the page ranks in web search. Check the Manual Actions report in Search Console ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/sd-policies)).

## How to add structured data: JSON-LD, CMS plugins and JavaScript

Google supports JSON-LD, Microdata and RDFa and recommends JSON-LD, a script block that sits apart from the visible text and is easiest to maintain ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/intro-structured-data)). On WordPress, Shopify or Wix, a plugin or the platform's SEO settings usually add the basics; check what they output before adding a second, conflicting block.

Google can read JSON-LD injected by JavaScript or Google Tag Manager, and suggests using Tag Manager variables that read values from the page rather than retyping them, to avoid mismatches. It warns that dynamically generated Product markup can make Shopping crawls less frequent and less reliable for fast-changing prices and stock ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/generate-structured-data-with-javascript)). For custom sites, including the Next.js sites we build, render the JSON-LD on the server so it is in the initial HTML.

## Step by step: add and test structured data

1. List your page types: home, about, services, branch or contact pages, products, guides.
2. Pick the markup for each from the table above, and check the feature is still listed in Google's search gallery.
3. Write the JSON-LD with real values from the page: the same name, address, +968 phone number, hours and OMR prices that visitors see.
4. Test each template in Google's [Rich Results Test](https://search.google.com/test/rich-results) and fix errors before going live.
5. After launch, run URL Inspection in Search Console on a few pages to confirm Google sees the markup in the rendered page.
6. Watch the rich result reports in Search Console, since markup often breaks later through template or CMS changes.
7. To measure the effect, Google suggests a before-and-after test: add markup to a few stable pages and compare their performance over a few months ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/intro-structured-data)).
8. Review hours, prices and branches every quarter, and before Ramadan and Eid.

## Common mistakes we find on Omani websites

- AggregateRating stars on the company's own LocalBusiness markup, often from a review widget. Not eligible, and risky.
- Template markup copied from examples, still showing example.com, a New York address or a US phone number.
- Opening hours set Monday to Friday by default, which is wrong for most Omani businesses.
- The same LocalBusiness block with the head office address on every page, including branch pages in other cities.
- An Arabic page whose markup is entirely in English.
- FAQ markup added only for the old drop-down effect, sometimes with questions that are not on the page.
- Two or three overlapping Organization blocks from a theme, a plugin and Tag Manager, each with a different name or logo.

## How OGB Labs helps

Structured data is part of every website we build and of our [SEO service in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/locations/oman/seo): Organization, site name, LocalBusiness for each branch with Omani hours and Ramadan schedules, breadcrumbs, Article markup with real authors, and Product markup in OMR for online stores, rendered on the server in both Arabic and English and tested before launch. On existing sites we audit the markup, remove what is broken or not allowed, and keep it in line with your Google Business Profile. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is structured data or schema markup?

Code, usually JSON-LD, that labels the facts on a page for search engines: business name, address, phone, hours, products and prices. Google uses it to understand pages and to make them eligible for rich results.

### Does schema markup help my business rank higher on Google in Oman?

Not directly. Google says structured data makes pages eligible for rich results but does not guarantee them. It helps Google understand your business, and rich results can make your listing more useful, but content, relevance and your Business Profile matter more for local rankings.

### Do I need special schema to appear in Google AI Overviews or ChatGPT?

No. Google says there is no special schema.org markup to add for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that structured data is not required for generative AI search. Keep the markup you use accurate and matching the visible text.

### Do FAQ rich results still work?

No. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026 and removed the documentation in June 2026. A visible FAQ section is still useful for visitors and AI tools, but FAQ markup no longer creates drop-down questions in results.

### Which schema type should an Omani clinic, restaurant or garage use?

The most specific LocalBusiness sub-type, for example Dentist or MedicalClinic, Restaurant, or AutoRepair, with the full address, +968 phone number, opening hours and coordinates. Google accepts several types as an array if you offer several services.

### Can I show Google review stars for my business using schema?

Not for your own business. Google's rules make self-serving reviews on LocalBusiness or Organization pages ineligible for stars, including embedded Google review widgets. Genuine product reviews can show stars on product pages.

### Should Arabic pages have their own structured data?

Yes. Markup must describe the visible page, so the Arabic page should carry Arabic text in its markup, while the phone, hours, coordinates and OMR prices stay identical across both languages.

### How do I add Ramadan opening hours in structured data?

Use openingHoursSpecification with validFrom and validThrough dates for the Ramadan period, and closing times after midnight if you stay open late. Update the Google Business Profile hours at the same time.

### How do I test my schema markup?

Use Google's Rich Results Test before launch, URL Inspection in Search Console after launch, and the rich result reports in Search Console to catch errors from later template changes.

### Is JSON-LD added with Google Tag Manager acceptable?

Google can read JSON-LD injected by JavaScript or Tag Manager, but recommends reading values from the page to avoid mismatches, and warns that dynamic Product markup can make Shopping crawls less reliable. Server-rendered JSON-LD is the safer choice.
