# Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in Oman: what they are, what changes for your clicks, and what Omani businesses should do

> Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are both available to everyone in Oman, in English and in Arabic. AI Overviews reached the Middle East and North Africa, and Arabic worldwide, in May 2025; AI Mode followed in English across MENA in August 2025 and in Modern Standard Arabic in October 2025, and Google's help pages list Oman among the supported countries for both. AI Overviews are a summary at the top of some results; AI Mode is a separate conversational tab for longer, comparative questions. Both build their answers by running many related searches at once (query fan-out) over Google's normal index, and both link to the pages they used. For an Omani business this changes three things: fewer clicks on simple informational questions, more weight on pages that answer detailed and comparative questions in English and Arabic, and a new reason to keep your Google Business Profile and prices accurate. Google says there are no extra technical requirements to appear: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. This guide from OGB Labs, a web and AI agency in Muscat, explains how the two features work, how Search Console counts them, where ads appear, and a practical plan for companies in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah.

## What AI Overviews and AI Mode are

AI Overviews are the AI-written summary that appears at the top of some Google results, with links to the pages it drew on. Google's [help page](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/14901683) says they appear "when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful", and its [Search Central documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) adds that they "often don't trigger", because they are shown only when they add something to the classic results. They are a core feature of results and cannot be switched off, but a searcher can pick the Web filter to see plain links only.

AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search, also reachable at google.com/ai and from the Google app home screen. Google describes it on its [AI Mode help page](https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/16011537) as its "most powerful AI search experience": it takes a longer question, divides it into subtopics, searches for each at the same time, and writes a fuller answer with links, and the person can keep asking follow-up questions. Questions can be typed, spoken, or asked with a photo or file. Since May 2026, a person can also tap into AI Mode directly from an AI Overview to continue the conversation.

The two features may use different models and techniques, Google says, so the same question can produce different answers and different links in each.

## When they arrived in Oman, and in Arabic

Google's MENA blog records the timeline. On 20 May 2025 it [brought AI Overviews to the Middle East and North Africa](https://blog.google/intl/en-mena/product-updates/explore-get-answers/bringing-ai-overviews-to-mena-and-in-arabic-globally/) for the first time, with Arabic support worldwide, on mobile and desktop. On 21 August 2025 it [introduced AI Mode in English across MENA](https://blog.google/intl/en-mena/product-updates/explore-get-answers/google-search-introducing-ai-mode-in-english-across-mena/). On 8 October 2025 it began rolling out [AI Mode in 38 new languages including Modern Standard Arabic](https://blog.google/intl/en-mena/product-updates/explore-get-answers/introducing-ai-mode-in-arabic/).

Both help pages, checked in October 2026, list Oman as a supported country and Arabic as a supported language. At Google I/O on 19 May 2026, Google said its new AI-powered Search box would roll out "in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available", and that Gemini 3.5 Flash had become the default model in AI Mode globally ([Google, May 2026](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/search-io-2026/)). In practice, an Omani customer searching in either language on a phone in Muscat now meets these features as part of normal Google use.

The Arabic support is for Modern Standard Arabic (fusha). Customers in Oman often type in a mix of dialect, MSA and English, so it is worth checking how your key questions behave in each form.

## How Google chooses the pages it links to

Neither feature has its own index. Google's [guide to optimising for generative AI](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) explains that they rely on the core Search ranking systems to retrieve pages from the Search index, then use those pages to write the answer. The technique Google calls query fan-out issues several related searches across subtopics at once, which is why an AI answer often links to more, and more varied, pages than a single classic results page.

Google's MENA posts say that early AI Mode users ask questions "two or three times the length of traditional search queries". A question such as "I run a small clinic in Al Khuwair; compare booking systems that work in Arabic and connect to WhatsApp" fans out into searches about clinic software, Arabic interfaces, WhatsApp integration, data protection in Oman and price. A business that has a clear page for each of those subtopics has several chances to be one of the links.

Eligibility is simple and strict. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and there are "no additional technical requirements" ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). Meeting them does not guarantee the page will be used.

## What changes for your clicks

Simple informational questions send fewer clicks. If the answer to "what are Oman's VAT thresholds" or "how long does .om domain registration take" fits in a summary, many people read it and stop. That is the nature of a summary; Google does not publish click-through figures for these features, and you should be wary of anyone quoting precise industry-wide percentages for Oman.

Complex and commercial questions send fewer but better visits. Google states that when people click from results pages with AI Overviews, "these clicks are higher quality", meaning visitors are more likely to spend more time on the site. A person who has already read a summary and still clicks is usually closer to a decision: comparing suppliers, checking a price or looking for a phone number.

More sites can be linked. Because of fan-out, Google says AI features display "a wider and more diverse set of helpful links" than a classic results page. A small Omani company that ranks on page two for a broad term can still be linked in an AI answer if it has the best page for a narrow subtopic.

Search Console counts it, but mixes it in. Clicks and impressions from both features are part of the Web search type in the Performance report. Google's [counting rules](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7042828) say every link in an AI Overview shares the single position of the Overview, AI Mode positions follow normal results-page rules, and a follow-up question in AI Mode counts as a new query. Search Console's separate Generative AI report shows impressions only; our guide to [measuring AI search traffic](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/measure-ai-search-traffic-ga4-search-console) shows how to read both.

## Where ads appear

For businesses running Google Ads in Oman, the [Google Ads help page on AI Overviews](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16297775) draws a line between two placements. Ads can show above or below an AI Overview in all of the 200-plus markets where AI Overviews are available, which includes Oman, through the normal auction. Ads inside an AI Overview are, as of October 2026, limited to English in twelve countries (Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and the US); Oman and the other Gulf states are not on the list.

Google also says ads are not shown inside AI Overviews for sensitive verticals such as finance and healthcare, and that matching ads to AI Overview content needs broad match, AI Max for Search, Performance Max, Shopping or Dynamic Search Ads. For an Omani advertiser today, the practical point is that the space above the AI Overview is still paid and the summary below it is organic, so paid and organic work together; our guide to [Google Ads vs SEO in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/google-ads-vs-seo-oman) covers the split.

## What Omani businesses should do

Google's advice is that the usual SEO fundamentals apply and no special optimisation is needed. Translated into a working plan for an Omani company, that means:

1. Check the basics: the site is indexed in Search Console, robots.txt and your CDN allow Googlebot, and no template adds nosnippet or a tight max-snippet to pages you want quoted. Google's [robots meta tag documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/robots-meta-tag) says these preview controls also limit what AI features can show.
2. List the long questions your customers really ask, from WhatsApp chats, calls and sales meetings, in English and Arabic. Those are the AI Mode queries; the short keywords are the old ones.
3. Give each subtopic a clear page or section with a direct answer first: prices or price ranges in OMR, timelines, the areas you serve (Muscat, Sohar, Salalah, Nizwa, Sur), Omani rules with a link to the regulator, and what goes wrong in real projects.
4. Publish the Arabic version of every important page, not just the home page, linked to the English one with hreflang. Arabic questions are answered from Arabic pages.
5. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and accurate, because Google says its AI responses can include information about local businesses. Our [Google Business Profile guide](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/google-business-profile-oman) lists the fields that matter.
6. Add real photos and video of your work, and keep structured data identical to the visible text.
7. Make the page worth the click: a clear next step on every page (WhatsApp button, phone number, booking or quote form), because the visitor who arrives from an AI answer has already read the basics.
8. Measure monthly in Search Console and GA4, and ask AI Mode your top ten questions in both languages to see which pages it links to.

## What not to do

- Do not buy "AI Overview optimisation" packages built on llms.txt files, special markup or content chunking. Google says none of these is needed for its AI features.
- Do not mass-produce near-identical pages for every suburb or keyword variant. Google treats pages made at scale to manipulate rankings or AI answers as scaled content abuse.
- Do not hide content behind images or scripts. Google asks that important content be available as text.
- Do not block Googlebot to keep content out of AI Overviews. AI is part of Search, so blocking Googlebot removes you from Search entirely; use the snippet controls on specific pages instead, accepting that they also reduce your normal snippets.
- Do not judge success by clicks alone. Count enquiries, WhatsApp conversations and bookings from organic search, since fewer but better visits can still mean more customers.

## What is coming next

At I/O in May 2026 Google announced [search agents and agentic booking](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/search-io-2026/): information agents that monitor the web for a person and send updates, booking for local experiences and services with live pricing and availability, and, for categories such as home repair, beauty and pet care, Google calling businesses on the user's behalf. Google said the booking and calling features would roll out in the US first; it has not announced dates for Oman.

The direction is clear enough to plan for. Businesses whose prices, availability, opening hours and booking options are published in a form machines can read, on the website and in Google Business Profile, will be easier for these agents to act on when they reach the Gulf. For service businesses that already take bookings on WhatsApp, an [AI WhatsApp assistant](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/whatsapp-ai-chatbot-oman) that answers price and availability questions is a sensible step in the same direction.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Google AI Mode available in Oman?

Yes. Google's AI Mode help page lists Oman as a supported country. AI Mode launched in English across the Middle East and North Africa on 21 August 2025 and in Modern Standard Arabic from 8 October 2025.

### Do AI Overviews appear in Arabic?

Yes. Google brought AI Overviews to MENA and to Arabic worldwide on 20 May 2025, on mobile and desktop, and its help page lists Arabic as a supported language.

### What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews are a summary that appears at the top of some normal search results. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab for longer, comparative questions, with follow-up questions and a fuller answer. Both link to web pages, and they may use different models, so their answers and links can differ.

### Do I need to do anything special to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode?

Google says no. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and there are no additional technical requirements, special files or schema markup. The usual SEO fundamentals and helpful, people-first content are what count.

### Will AI Overviews reduce my website traffic?

For simple informational questions answered in the summary, you can expect fewer clicks. Google says clicks from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, with visitors spending more time on site, and that AI features link to a wider range of sites. Measure enquiries and sales, not just visits.

### How do I see AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Both are included in the Performance report under the Web search type. All links in an AI Overview share one position, AI Mode follows normal position rules, and a follow-up question in AI Mode counts as a new query. The Generative AI report shows impressions in these features separately.

### Can my Google Ads appear inside AI Overviews in Oman?

Not yet. Ads can appear above or below AI Overviews in Oman through the normal auction, but ads inside AI Overviews are limited to English in twelve countries, none of them in the Gulf, according to Google Ads Help in October 2026.

### Can I stop Google using my pages in AI Overviews?

Only with the same controls that limit normal snippets: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Blocking Googlebot would remove the site from Google Search entirely, and Google-Extended does not affect Search.

### Should Omani businesses write content in Arabic for AI Mode?

Yes. AI Mode supports Modern Standard Arabic, and Arabic questions are answered from Arabic pages. Publish your important service pages and guides in Arabic as well as English and connect the versions with hreflang.
