# Using AI to write website content in Oman: what Google allows, what gets penalised, and how to still rank

> Yes, you can use AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude to help write your website content, and Google does not penalise content just because AI helped make it. Google says appropriate use of AI or automation is not against its guidelines, and that using AI gives content no special gains either way: it is judged on whether it is helpful, original and reliable. What Google does act against is using AI, or any other method, to produce many pages mainly to manipulate rankings without adding value for users, which it calls scaled content abuse under its spam policies. Pages can then rank lower or drop out of results, and a human reviewer can apply a manual action. Google also tells site owners to fact-check and review all AI-generated text before publishing, including titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text, because AI models can produce confident but wrong statements. For Omani businesses, the risky patterns are near-identical pages for every city such as Muscat, Sohar and Salalah, machine-translated Arabic pages published without review, and AI-written product data sent to Google Merchant Center without the AI label Google requires. This guide from OGB Labs, a web and digital marketing agency in Muscat, explains Google's rules with links to its documentation and gives a workflow that keeps AI useful and safe.

## Why this question matters for Omani businesses now

Most marketing teams in Oman now use an AI assistant for something: a first draft of a service page, a blog post, product descriptions, an Arabic version of an English page, or meta descriptions for a whole site. It is fast and cheap, so the temptation is to publish dozens of pages at once. The question owners ask us is whether Google will punish the site for it.

The short answer is that Google cares about the result, not the tool. Its guidance focuses on whether content is helpful, accurate and made for people, and its spam policies target mass-produced pages with no added value however they were written ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/02/google-search-and-ai-content)). The same standard decides whether AI assistants such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity pick your page as a source, which our guide to [getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/get-cited-by-chatgpt-perplexity-google-ai) covers.

## What Google actually says about AI-generated content

Google's position has been consistent since its February 2023 guidance. It rewards "original, high-quality content" that shows experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T), and focuses on the quality of content rather than how it is produced. In its FAQ, Google says appropriate use of AI or automation is not against its guidelines, and that using AI "doesn't give content any special gains" ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/02/google-search-and-ai-content)).

Its current page on generative AI content adds practical detail. AI can be "particularly useful when researching a topic, and to add structure to original content", but using it to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate the scaled content abuse policy. Google also warns that generative models predict likely words rather than retrieve facts, so their output can contain errors, and says it is critical to fact-check and review all AI-generated content before publishing ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/using-gen-ai-content)).

**AI content: allowed and risky uses**

| Use of AI | Google's position | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Research, outlines and structure for a page you write | Described as useful | Use freely; add your own facts and examples |
| Drafting a page that an expert then edits and fact-checks | Allowed if the result is helpful and accurate | Review every claim, price and date before publishing |
| Generating many pages with little added value | Scaled content abuse, a spam policy violation | Do not publish; improve or remove such pages |
| Titles, meta descriptions, alt text and structured data | Must be reviewed like the page itself | Check each one; never publish unchecked bulk output |
| Product titles and descriptions for Merchant Center | Allowed, but must be labelled as AI-generated | Use the structured title and description attributes |

## Scaled content abuse: the line not to cross

Google defines scaled content abuse as many pages generated mainly to manipulate search rankings rather than help users, typically large amounts of unoriginal content with little or no value, "no matter how it's created". Sites that violate the spam policies may rank lower or not appear in results at all, and Google can apply a manual action after human review ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies)). Google's examples include:

- Using generative AI or similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users.
- Scraping feeds, search results or other content to generate many pages, including through automated synonymising or translating, where little value is added.
- Stitching or combining content from different pages without adding value.
- Creating multiple sites to hide the scaled nature of the content.
- Creating many pages that make little sense to a reader but contain search keywords.

## Three patterns we see on Omani sites

City pages. Pages such as "web design in Muscat", "web design in Sohar", "web design in Salalah" and "web design in Nizwa" that say the same thing with the city name swapped are what Google's doorway abuse policy describes: pages targeted at specific regions or cities that funnel users to one page, or substantially similar pages that are closer to search results than a browsable site ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies)). AI makes these easy to produce, which is why they are common. A location page is worth having only if it has something specific to that place: your office or team there, local projects, delivery areas, opening hours, or local rules.

Machine-translated Arabic. Google lists automated translating without added value as a form of scaled content abuse ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies)). Translating your English pages into Arabic with AI is a reasonable starting point, but a native Arabic speaker should review the text, fix the terms Omani customers actually search for and adapt examples, prices and calls to action. Google also recommends one language per page and avoiding side-by-side translations ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/international/managing-multi-regional-sites)). Our [Arabic SEO guide for Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/arabic-seo-oman) covers the rest of a bilingual setup.

Bulk blog posts. Fifty AI posts on general topics, published in a week, rarely help. Google's helpful content questions warn against producing "lots of content on many different topics" in the hope that some of it ranks, using extensive automation to produce content on many topics, and mainly summarising what others say without adding much value ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)). Fewer posts that answer the real questions your Omani customers ask, with your prices, timelines and experience, do better.

## What makes AI-assisted content rank: experience and effort

Google's self-assessment questions ask whether content provides original information, research or analysis, whether it shows first-hand expertise, and whether a reader leaves feeling they have learned enough to reach their goal ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)). AI cannot supply your experience, so that is the part you add.

Google's guidance on main content describes how its quality raters judge effort: using generative AI to produce large amounts of text without manual oversight or curation counts as "little to no effort", and attribution to other sources does not replace original effort ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)). Raters do not set rankings directly, but their ratings help Google check that its systems reward the right pages.

- Real numbers: your OMR prices, delivery times in Oman, project timelines, opening hours.
- First-hand detail: photos of your work, your team, your shop or site visits, client results you can share.
- Local knowledge: Omani regulations, the ministries and portals involved, how things work in Muscat compared with other governorates.
- Clear sources: links to the official pages your facts come from, as this guide does.
- A named author or reviewer with a short bio, where readers would expect one.

## Who, How and Why: bylines and AI disclosure

Google suggests asking "Who, How and Why" about each piece of content. Who: make it clear who wrote it, with bylines where readers expect them. Google warns that fabricated creator profiles, such as AI-generated headshots, made-up names or false credentials, are deception and a signal of a low-quality page ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)).

How: if automation substantially generated the content, Google suggests telling readers how AI was used and why it was useful, where someone might reasonably wonder how the content was created. Google also says giving AI an author byline is "probably not the best way" to make that clear ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2023/02/google-search-and-ai-content)). Why: the content should exist mainly to help people. Using AI to produce content mainly to manipulate rankings is a spam policy violation ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)).

## AI product descriptions and images for online stores

Google's generative AI guidance points ecommerce sites to Merchant Center's own policy ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/using-gen-ai-content)). Merchant Center requires AI-generated product titles to be sent in the structured title attribute and AI-generated descriptions in the structured description attribute, each with the digital source type "trained_algorithmic_media". AI-generated images must keep IPTC metadata marking them as AI-generated, and you should not strip that metadata from images made with tools such as Google's Product Studio ([Merchant Center Help](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/14743464)).

For an Omani store sending an Arabic and an English feed, that means labelling AI-written titles and descriptions in both. Our guide to [Google Merchant Center and free product listings in Oman](https://www.ogblabs.com/guides/google-merchant-center-free-listings-oman) covers the rest of the feed setup.

## A safe AI content workflow for your website

1. Start from a real customer question, from WhatsApp chats, calls, sales meetings or Search Console queries, not from a keyword list alone.
2. Write down what only you know first: prices in OMR, timelines, process, examples, mistakes clients make. Give these notes to the AI tool.
3. Use AI for the outline and a first draft, in English or Arabic.
4. Have someone who knows the subject edit it: remove generic filler, add specifics, and fact-check every number, date, law and name against an official source.
5. For Arabic, have a native speaker review the wording and the search terms Omani customers use, rather than publishing a raw translation.
6. Review the title, meta description, image alt text and any structured data separately, as Google asks ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/using-gen-ai-content)).
7. Add a byline or reviewer, and a short note on how AI was used where readers would expect it.
8. Publish fewer, stronger pages. Watch Search Console impressions and clicks for each one, and improve or remove pages that attract nothing after a few months.

## If your site already has a lot of AI content

- Check the Manual actions report in Search Console. Google notifies site owners there when a human reviewer takes action.
- List pages with no impressions or clicks in Search Console over the last few months; these are candidates to merge, improve or remove.
- Merge near-duplicate city or service pages into one strong page, and redirect the old URLs to it.
- Add the experience and facts that only your business has to the pages worth keeping.
- Do not change dates to make pages look fresh. Google lists changing dates without substantial changes as a warning sign ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content)).

## Does AI content get cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

AI assistants link to pages that give clear, specific, trustworthy answers, and Google's AI features draw on the same pages its Search systems find. A page with original facts, local prices and clear sources is more useful as a citation than a generic page that repeats what is already everywhere. ## Frequently asked questions

### Does Google penalise AI-generated content?

Not for being AI-generated. Google says appropriate use of AI is not against its guidelines and judges content on quality, not on how it was produced. It acts against content made mainly to manipulate rankings, including many AI pages with no added value, under its scaled content abuse policy.

### Can I use ChatGPT to write my website in Oman?

Yes, as a drafting tool. Add your own prices, experience and local details, have someone who knows the subject edit it, and fact-check every claim before publishing. Google specifically asks site owners to review AI-generated content for accuracy.

### Is it safe to translate my site into Arabic with AI?

Use AI translation as a first draft, then have a native Arabic speaker review it. Google lists automated translation that adds little value among its examples of scaled content abuse, and Omani customers notice unnatural Arabic.

### Should I create a separate page for every city in Oman?

Only if each page has something specific to that city, such as a local office, projects, delivery areas or opening hours. Near-identical pages with the city name swapped match Google's description of doorway abuse.

### Do I have to say that AI was used?

Google recommends disclosing how AI was used where readers would reasonably wonder how the content was created. For Merchant Center, AI-generated product titles, descriptions and images must be labelled using the attributes and metadata Google specifies.

### Can I list AI as the author?

Google says an AI author byline is probably not the best way to show that AI was involved. Use a real author or reviewer, and explain the use of AI separately where readers would expect it. Never invent authors or credentials.

### Does AI-written content rank in Google?

It can, if it is useful, original and accurate. Google says using AI gives content no special gains: it is judged like any other content.

### What happens if Google treats my site as spam?

Pages that violate Google's spam policies may rank lower or disappear from results, and a human reviewer can apply a manual action, which you will see in Search Console's Manual actions report.
